Circle to buy nearly 1,000 IBM blockchain patents to bolster USDC infrastructure
Stablecoin issuer Circle said it is acquiring nearly 1,000 blockchain patents from IBM, covering more than 680 patent families and focusing on areas including blockchain infrastructure, banking, payments, insurance, and supply-chain applications [1] [2].
Circle did not disclose financial terms of the deal. Reporting also said the acquisition makes Circle the largest U.S. holder of blockchain patents and is expected to support products such as USDC, Circle Payments Network, Arc, and agentic finance tools [3].
The patent portfolio purchase is positioned by Circle as a way to strengthen its blockchain-related capabilities around USDC infrastructure and related products [4].
