Ethereum developers propose post-quantum validator deposit contract to replace BLS staking
Ethereum developers have proposed a new post-quantum-ready validator deposit contract intended to support variable-length public keys and credential metadata by using scheme identifiers to distinguish cryptographic systems while reserving Scheme 0 for existing BLS deposits [1] [2].
One proposal describes replacing the legacy deposit contract’s Merkle-tree mechanism with execution-layer requests based on EIP-7685, and adding an irreversible migration switch designed to first enable and then permanently disable new BLS deposits as Ethereum transitions toward post-quantum signatures [1].
Other reporting similarly characterizes the effort as a staking upgrade proposal that would retire BLS deposits in favor of post-quantum-ready staking/validator signatures via a redesigned deposit contract [2] [3].
Crypto Briefing framed the potential impact as improving Ethereum’s resilience against future quantum computing threats, which it said could influence market confidence and future valuations (as an interpretation in its reporting) [4].
