China expands e-CNY bank network by adding 8 more institutions to reach 30 operators
China’s central bank has expanded the roster of banks authorized to operate with the digital yuan (e-CNY), adding 8 more banks and bringing the authorized operator count to 30, according to reporting on the latest network expansion dated Aug. 17, 2026 [1] [2].
Across the year to date, the People’s Bank of China has added 20 new operators through two rounds of expansions, with the most recent additions tripling the bank roster since the start of 2026, the coverage states [1] [3].
The updates increase the number of participating financial institutions supporting e-CNY distribution and related services [2] [4].
